Sometimes, even the classics won’t cut it – you’ve had your classic chow mein or chicken balls one too many times, and despite how much you love that meat-lovers pizza from your local, you just don’t fancy digging into one again.
It’s time to expand your horizons, my hungry friend. Cast your culinary net a little wider, spread your starving wings, and feast on something a little further afield – so grab your Just Eat discount code and let us show you some of the curveball-cuisines that could make your next takeaway that little bit more interesting.
Sushi Takeaway
There are pretty distinct differences between your typical Chinese takeaway and some intricate, lovingly crafted Japanese cuisine.
We aren’t just talking rice and fish here, either – let’s not go making some bold assumptions about sushi. From light, fresh and fragrant vegetable rolls to prawn, crab and chicken creations, the flavours are massively expansive.
And that, my friend, is before you’ve even dipped into the world of sashimi, intricately created curries (a classic Katsu is a wonderful thing) and bento boxes, built with tempura battered prawns, grilled chicken or lovingly cooked grilled fish with rice and miso soup and all kinds of stunning garnishes.
We recommend dipping into a donburi – typically your choice of protein, served in a sauce of your choice (think teriyaki or katsu) with rice and miso soup. A delicious way to try something new.
Sushi takeaways tend to be great for mixing and matching lots of smaller dishes too, which is fantastic for those nights when you want a little bit of everything…
Mediterranean Takeaway
Okay, ‘Mediterranean’ covers a lot of countries – but a Mediterranean takeout tends to cover fairly iconic Turkish style of cooking with specialist dishes from Greece and France.
This means you’ll find vast arrays of meze – hot and cold smaller dishes that cover all kinds of craving, from smaller meat dishes to classics like calamari and halloumi – alongside charcoaled meat dishes, staples like chicken shish and lamb kofte, and specialist moussaka-styled creations that hark back to dishes you’ve once tried that are now created to traditional perfection.
You’ll also find more fresh cheeses, olives, rices and salads with this kind of cuisine than with others, which is a refreshing change for a takeaway and adds a balance of flavour you wouldn’t typically find.
It’s also worth remembering that the Mediterranean diet is notoriously healthy too, so you can rest assured that you’re probably doing yourself a bit of a favour compared to swallowing down a whole pizza. Probably.
Jamaican Takeaway
This falls under the category of “always love it whenever I eat it, but never consider it for a takeaway”. Well, more fool you Sir, more fool you.
I barely even need to elaborate on the dishes you’ll discover with true Jamaican cuisine – the classics are classics for a reason.
Jerk chicken is a staple, and every restaurant will take endless pride in their own special recipe that knocks the socks off every other recipe around. All kinds of chicken stews and curried goats and braised oxtail dishes will draw you in with depth of flavour and warmth that is unparalleled. Steamed and fried and deliciously flavoured fish dishes – yes, ackee and saltfish included – will give you a taste of the basic cooking with sumptuous flavours that Jamaican cooking is known for.
… yeah, so long story short, you’re onto a winner.
Fish and Chips Takeaway
… bear with me on this one.
Most of your typical takeaways can muddle together some battered fish and some half-decent chips and bring them to your table, but not many of us would go direct to an exquisite chippy for a dedicated delivery.
Trust me, it’s worth doing.
A specialist fish and chip bar – or, you know, a proper chippy – will be a specialist for a reason, and will typically come in at a similar price point if you’re watching the pennies.
It also means if you take a really good look and find a great one, you’ll get quality, fresh fish, battered with a well-loved and long-held-secret recipe, and a healthy portion of those indistinguishable chips. This is not one of those times to settle for a typical takeaway, and next time you get a craving, it might be worth going direct to something you might not have picked otherwise…
Plus, you’ll get proper curry sauce/gravy, which is massively important in life in general.
Lebanese Takeaway
A little scarcer on the streets of the UK, but no less a wonderful recommendation. The flavours and dishes in many Lebanese takeaways sit a little closer to some of the Mediterranean establishments you’ll find, but these are definitely worth a look-in for their own unique flavours.
It’s best to think of the wide variety of smaller dishes and dips and combinations – creations like tabouleh, hummus, falafel and libneh are obvious staples, with shish meats and shawarma making up the meat-and-bread basics that are wonderfully spiced and always, always delicious.
Basically, you’ll want to order a little bit of everything, and dip everything in everything else and eat it all in one mouthful. No piece of bread will be left undipped, no piece of meat uncoated in some delicious sauce or cheese or yoghurt, and nobody will go hungry.
It’s definitely worth going with a mixed mezze or chef’s recommended selection, as this will cover a lot of the staple items (or each restaurant’s specialities) and will tend to cost a little less. Everybody wins!
Well, if you aren’t hungry now, you must have something wrong with you.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with your favourite pizza or a chinese takeaway on a weekend when you really need it – but it’s worth trying something new once in a while.
We won’t let you down – especially if you use a Just Eat discount code to get all kinds of deliciousness for less!
