Oscar-inspired makeup looks you can actually wear28 February 2019
The Oscars are a delight for film aficionados, but for the beauty lovers among us, it’s a treasure chest of makeup inspiration, too. Although many red carpet looks don’t translate easily to the everyday, we’ve scoured our fave stars’ faces and figured out how to make the top Oscars trends a touch more wearable.
If you don’t have a celeb’s budget to spend on beauty products, don’t stress - we’ve got plenty of health and beauty vouchers to help you save on award-worthy makeup. Flutter those lashes and prep that pout - you’ll be glammed up in no time with these handy makeup hacks!
The look: Smokey eye
Who wore it: J Lo, Maye Musk
The smokey eye isn’t a new creation, but the 2019 Oscars saw some fresh twists on this classic look. We love Maye Musk’s bold metallic choice (who says there’s an age limit on glitter?) - make it wearable by pairing dark eyeliner with a dot of shimmery liquid shadow in your inner eyes to make them pop. Get inspired by J Lo’s glow and use soft browns for both your shadow and eyeliner, blending barely-there autumnal tones on your lids. Although the Oscars are all about sparkle, opt for matte colours if you’re after a look you can wear to work as well as on the weekend. As always with a smokey eye, keep the rest of your makeup neutral to let your eyes shine!
The look: Tonal makeup
Who wore it: Emma Stone, Emilia Clarke
Matching eyes and lips can seem a bit daunting for every day, but the key to this look is to keep things simple with earthy tones. Opt for multi-purpose products like the Benefit tinted lip and cheek stain, or use your fave nude lipstick as a blush by warming a small amount between your fingers and applying to your cheekbones. When it comes to shadow, choose a similar shade (think light pinks or warm browns) to keep the colours uniform. This look is the perfect combination of understated and put-together (and we love any look with products that double up!)
The look: Barely there
Who wore it: Lady Gaga, Irina Shayk
This year’s ceremony saw many stars opt for understated eyes and lips, with barely-there foundation. This fresh-faced beauty can seem tough to achieve, but there are a few handy hacks to make it work for us mere mortals! Dewy skin is key to this look. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise - and opt for something rich in vitamin C to boost a natural glow! The ‘no makeup’ look doesn’t mean going bare-faced - blurring primer or BB cream will help to disguise imperfections without the cakiness of a heavy foundation. Skip the clumpy mascara and opt for an eyelash serum for long, lush natural lashes - it’ll take a week or two to see results, but it’s worth it when you can ditch the falsies for good!
The look: Coral lip
Who wore it: Charlize Theron, Olivia Colman
We love a bold lip - it’s an easy way to jazz up your makeup without too much work! Opt like these leading ladies and mix it up with a fun coral shade (it’s basically spring now, right?) Make this look wearable for every day by keeping your eye makeup to a minimum and letting your lips do the talking. Olivia went for a dusty coral shade that’s perfect if you want a pop of colour without making too much of a statement (this Charlotte Tilbury lippy is a pretty good dupe). Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, choose a bright shade like Charlize’s that’s sure to steal the show! Whatever shade you choose, make sure you’ve prepped your lips in advance with a decent lip balm, and use a lipliner for a crisp finish.
