More about the National Trust
Preserving Beautiful Places for Everyone, Forever
Explore, discover and enjoy the natural spots and heritage sites that our nation has to offer with the National Trust. Millions of people enjoy the hundreds of protected sites owned by the National Trust every year. With hundreds of miles of coastline, thousands of acres of farmland, hundreds of historical properties, not to mention millions of cups of tea being served, the National Trust is a destination of wonder for adults and children from the UK and beyond. Their vast lands and beautiful properties are home to creatures and artifacts, all as precious as each other. Conserving endangered wildlife and caring for pieces of history is just part of what the National Trust do. When you join the National Trust, you’re becoming part of something worthwhile. Your membership fee supports the continued work of the Trust- whilst allowing you to enjoy places, spaces and natural beauty that would otherwise be in danger.
When did the National Trust start?
The National Trust was officially founded in 1895, less than 10 years after one of the three founders, Octavia Hill, began work to conserve a garden in London. From there, the idea of preserving, protecting and sustaining natural places and historical buildings around the UK was born. Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley worked to create the not-for-profit organisation and quickly gained support and funding, as well as donations of beautiful buildings that needed caring for.
The first National Trust place was a section of cliff at Dinas Oleu in Wales, followed by its first building, the Alfriston Clergy in Sussex. Soon enough, the Trust added the nature reserve at Wicken Fen near Cambridge to its list, as well as Kanturk Castle in the Republic of Ireland. Within the first 50 years, the Trust acquired more than 100,000 acres of land and just under 100 buildings. Already with the support of thousands of members, the National Trust was then able to blossom and grow into the proud symbol of conservation and heritage that it is today- with more than 4 million members and counting.
