What are the best mini-breaks for romance?

14 February 2019

Whatever your budget, there are few things better than getting away from it all. Whether that’s a day trip to the beach, acting like a tourist in London, or visiting somewhere a little further afield, there are ways to impress far beyond a dozen roses, a twee bear, or some overpriced chocolates.

Your friendly romance-facilitators at vouchercloud have put their heads together to make the process a little easier

The Gower, Wales

Wales is a hotspot for stunning landscapes and long beaches. Amply connected by the M4 is Swansea - specifically, The Gower. Two hours drive from Bristol, and just over an hour from Cardiff, It’s the first area in the entirety of the UK to be marked as an area of outstanding national beauty. Believe it or not, Rhossli Bay was named Europes third best beach - behind Rabbit Beach in Sicily and Playa de las Catedrales in Spain. Not bad for a short drive.

Even better, AirBnBs in Swansea are varied, cheap and often provide exquisite views. Take your loved one for a hike in the scenery, and return to a jacuzzi with ocean views. That definitely beats some sweets.

Bath, England

This is a city steeped in history. Settled by the Romans and improved upon by the Victorians (who used the city as a party destination). Today, with ready access to the spa, one of the world’s last bridges with shops on both sides, and a huge selection of world-class cuisine, Bath is certainly not the cheapest destinations to visit - but it’s possible to do on a budget.

The skyline walk gives you a perfect view across Bath itself, and for a modest investment, you can enjoy a moonlit dip in the heated pool atop the Bath Thermae Spa.

For the history aficionados out there, Bath is said to be the site where King Arthur defeated the Saxons. For those with more tactile desires, a visit to Sally Lunn’s may be in order? There, you can find the original Bath Bun - brought to the country in the 1680s by Sally Lunn herself.

Will the waters cure all ills as believed? Possibly not - but they’ll certainly melt the stress away.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Towering castles, amazing architecture and a thriving foodie culture, Edinburgh has earned its reputation as a romance destination a hundred times over.

You can nab a hotel from £40 per night via lastminute.com, using it as your base to explore the delights Edinburgh has to offer - from the cat cafes and walking tours, to touring the castle or visiting the local distillery for a tipple.

After dark is when the real magic happens. The landscape lights up and, if you’re in the right place, you can catch a truly majestic sunset as the city comes to live beneath you.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

From the Fairy Pools to Star Wars (The Force Awakens) filming locations, there’s something for everyone here - especially if you take the phrase ‘getaway’ as an instruction rather than a loose recommendation. With just over 10,000 people living permanently on the Isle of Skye, even with a tourism boom in recent years, it’s far enough removed from the bigger cities to let you reconnect with nature and - better yet - the person you bring along for the trip.

The best way to get to Skye is to take advantage of Glasgow airport. From there, The nearest rail location on the mainland is Mallaig - visitors will need to take a ferry across followed by a bus ride.

To help make this romantic gesture a reality, vouchercloud has put together amazing deals to turn this pricey adventure into a budget-friendly tryst. Take a look at our offers with AirBnB, Lastminute.com and Sykes Cottages on our Travel and Accomodation page to build your perfect getaway!
