More About Whittard of Chelsea

Back in the Victoria era, they knew the value of a good cup of tea – and Walter Whittard, who was born into a family of leather traders in 1861, knew this better than anyone. Rejecting the family trade, he decided to pursue his passion for sourcing the finest quality coffee, tea and cocoa from around the world. At 25 years old, Walter set up his first Whittard of Chelsea shop on Fleet Street in 1886. That year was one of the busiest for the tea industry in Britain, and the Fleet Street store experienced great success. Filled to the brim with varieties of loose leaf tea, tightly wrapped packages of cocoa and exquisite coffee samples, the shop became famous for the special blends that Walter developed for his customers.

In the 1890’s, Walter moved from his little Fleet Street shop to Mincing Lane, known as London’s ‘Street of Tea’ where his expertise in the subject was in high demand, and as the 1900’s approached, a ‘Whittard Original’ blend was the choice of tea-drinkers across the country. Today, the main aim of the company is to remain true to the philosophy of their founder – buy the best, and blend the brightest!
