MUJI was born out of a reaction to consumer society in 80’s Japan, when a brand's name became a large proportion of a product's worth and cheap, poor quality items were flooding markets. MUJI wanted to create products that prioritise ‘good’ functionality over the brand. Infact its name MUJI derived from the word ‘Mujirushi’ which means ‘no brand’. And out of these ideas came a product line of house ware that values simplicity, minimising excess throughout the production process.
