Edinburgh Zoo first opened its doors to the public in 1913. Its mission was - and still is - to connect the public with animals and safeguard vulnerable species from extinction. Today, it manages both of these aims admirably and 800,000 people visit the zoo every year to see the animals, learn more about rare and endangered specials, and have a fun day out.

You can visit the zoo 365 days of the year, although you may find some attractions close over winter to allow for essential maintenance work (check the zoo’s website for further details of closures). Edinburgh Zoo has a world-class educational programme in place, so it would be remiss of us not to suggest that you make time to listen to some of the education talks scheduled on a daily basis. Talks take place every fifteen minutes or so, at various exhibits within the zoo.
