Drawing off the sheepskin boots of surfers back home, the Australian Brian Smith founded UGG in 1978 in California. He and co-founder Doug Jensen built the business up from the ground with the hope of reaching the American surfing community. After 16 years of perseverance, UGG received their first huge break when the U.S.Olympic team wore them to the 1994 Winter Olympics. Soon sportsmen and celebrities were wearing them, and they became a household name, no more so than when pop-culture queen Oprah Winfrey included them in her collection of ‘Oprah’s Favourite Things’ in 2003.
No longer associated specifically with sports, celebrities as famous as Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz were helping launch the signature Ugg boots to the point of worldwide fame.
Soon UGG stores were open in New York, Paris, London, Tokyo and Beijing and were even collaborating with titans of the shoe industry, Jimmy Choo. 35 years in the brand have expanded past shoes into clothing and accessories, but they will forever be warmly remembered for their signature boots.
