One of Bristol’s proudest historical gems, The SS Great Britain launched from Bristol’s harbours in 1843 to mass acclaim and celebration. The designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel is one of the most celebrated names in engineering history and is also responsible for the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and was a pioneer of the Great Western Railway. Two years later the SS Great Britain launched from Liverpool to become the first iron steamer to brave the perilous waters of the Atlantic. Though modern travellers can fly in a handful of hours, their journey took a whopping 14 days and 21 hours. But after enduring a life-threatening storm, the ship was reworked as a floating warehouse in the Falkland Islands, and, too damaged by the storm, was eventually purposefully sunk in shallow waters. But through a miraculous twist of fate, she was rescued by investors and repurposed for even greater journeys, ferrying immigrants from Britain to Australia.
Exactly 127 years after her launch, to the very day, the SS Great Britain returned to the dock in which she was first constructed. And there she sits, ready to be explored and treasured by budding sailors, engineers, historians and buccaneers alike.
